Performance Characteristics and Features to look for in a UPS System

Reliability

Overall System Design

  • What is the MTBF of the system? Manufacturers should have this data.
  • Minimum single points of failure either with single module or parallel system ( Centralized Bypass is a single point of failure)

Redundancy

  • UPS should have redundant design features such as Fans, Power Supplies, Batteries, parallel communication buss.

Topology

  • Double conversion for greater load protection
  • Distributed static switches for parallel operation
  • Dual Input capable
  • Six pulse SCR or IGBT rectifier
  • Transistorized PWM or SCR inverter

Design History

  • Field proven design, large number of installs.
Installability

Standards

  • UL 1778 Listed
  • FCC Class A, Part 15 Compliant
  • IEEE 587 B Voltage Surge Withstand

EPO

  • Remote EPO capable per NEC

Foot Print

  • Minimum footprint for UPS module, battery, and options

Wiring Terminations

  • Top and bottom cable access
  • Are lugs included?

Field Retro Fit Capability

  • Can parallel UPS module be added in the field?
  • Can other options be added in the field?

Maneuverability

  • Caster and Leveling feet
Source Compatibility

Efficiency

  • 92.5 – 94% good for double conversion.

Low Input Harmonics

  • <30% THD for 6-Pulse rectifier.
  • <7% THD with optional 5th Harmonic filter.
  • <4% THD with optional 11th Harmonic filter
Input THD without filter

FCC rating

  • FCC Class A, Part 15 tested.

Building Interfaces

  • Remote EPO capable
  • External contacts for remote alarm annunciation
  • Programmable contacts

Generator Interface

  • Smart Filters available to reduce harmonics
  • Contacts available to communicate with generator
  • Adjustable parameters such as slew rate and phase angle.
Output Performance

Space Vector Modulated (PWM) inverter recommended for superior output performance.

Voltage Regulation

  • Line to Line – No more than +/-1% Vreg. for static loads
  • Line to Neutral – No more than +/-3% Vreg. for 100% load imbalance

Transient Response

  • Step Load Response – No more than +/-3% THD for steps of 0-100%
  • Recovery Time – Recovery to within +/-1% THD in less than 1 cycle

Non-Linear Capability

  • Distortion with Non-linear loads – No more than 3%THD for 100% non-linear load.

Overload Capability

  • Inverter ability – 125% for 10min, 150% for 60sec
  • Bypass ability – 110% continuous, 200% for 5min, 1000% for ½ cycle
Serviceability

Component Layout

  • Front access to main components and assemblies.
  • Internal Maintenance Bypass to reduce down time.
  • One main control board that is interchangeable with other kVA sizes, reduces parts count.
